What's in Your Weather Emergency Kit?

We have an ongoing joke in Oklahoma that severe weather season starts on January 1 and ends on December 31. Severe weather can threaten at any time of year in the US. Now that spring is here, the risk will increase. Are you ready? Do you have an emergency kit, should you need to take shelter?

Tornadoes and severe weather is a good reason to take shelter. Whether you are hiding in a basement, storm shelter or interior room, you should have an emergency kit. Some basics to keep are:

• Water
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• First aid kit
• Snacks
• Battery operated radio
• Cell phone charger

If you have children, add in diapers, wipes and toys or games to keep them busy. Those who require prescription medication should take some with them into their shelter. Gather blankets and bike helmets to protect yourself. 

 What are other things needed when taking shelter? It's always a good idea to grab your purse or wallet as you head to your safe place. If your home or neighborhood is severely damaged, emergency services will have you evacuate. You will then need to show proof that you live in that area to return.

When a Tornado Watch is issued, start charging your phone. Text or call any family members who may not be paying attention and let them know what is going on.
