Thunderstorms may develop Thursday across the High Plains and Upper Midwest as moisture increases through the day. Heavy rain will continue across southern Florida ahead of a cold front on Thursday.
Thunderstorms for the High Plains to the Upper Midwest on Thursday
The risk for severe thunderstorms will remain fairly low across Region 1 today, but plentiful moisture and daytime heating will support the development of a few strong thunderstorms. Strong winds and large hail will be the primary hazards with these storms. Some of these storms may grow into clusters as they move southeastward through the late afternoon and early evening. Activity should quickly dissipate after sunset.
Major Cities in Region: Cheyenne, WY, Denver, CO, Goodland, KS, Amarillo, TX, Dodge City, KS, Sioux Falls, SD, Green Bay, WI
Thunderstorm Potential Thursday for the Northern Rockies
An area of low pressure and cold front moving through the region will be the focus for thunderstorm development today. Activity is expected to begin during the afternoon with severe winds and large hail the primary hazards, but a tornado or two cannot be ruled out. Storms will grow into segments and clusters into the evening.
Major Cities in Region: Missoula, MT, Helena, MT, Great Falls, MT
Excessive Rainfall Possible across Southern Florida Thursday
A low risk for excessive rainfall will exist on Thursday across far southern Florida. The region has already seen numerous showers and the ground is very saturated. Rainfall amounts near an inch could promote minor flooding and local runoff in some locations.
Major Cities in Region: Miami, FL, Fort Lauderdale, FL
Risk for Thunderstorms Friday across the Northern Plains
A strong jet stream is forecast to overspread the Northern Plains on Friday. With increasing moisture and instability, thunderstorms are likely from Montana into North Dakota. With any storms that develop, large hail, severe winds, and isolated tornadoes will all be potential hazards.
Major Cities in Region: Minot, ND, Bismarck, ND, Grand Forks, ND, Fargo, ND
Potential for Thunderstorms across the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest on Saturday
A weak upper level low is forecast to lift into Manitoba over the weekend. Plentiful moisture across the region will create an environment favorable for the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms late in the day and into the evening. The associated cold front may aid in the development of thunderstorms with activity expected to track southeastward into the Upper Midwest. Hail and damaging winds will be the primary hazards with this activity.
Major Cities in Region: Sioux Falls, SD, Minneapolis, MN, Green Bay, WI
A Look Ahead
A developing area of low pressure over the High Plains on Sunday may allow for the development of thunderstorms. If storms do develop, large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes will all be potential hazards. The threat will spread into the Northern and Central Plains on Monday and into the Midwest on Tuesday.
