Locally heavy rainfall is possible on Tuesday across portions of Idaho, Nevada, and Utah. Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across the Great Plains.
A persistent upper level trough over the West Coast and strong southwesterly flow over the Desert Southwest will maintain chances for rain and thunderstorms across the region on Tuesday. 1-2 inches of rain will be possible in some areas..
A weak upper level trough out of the northern Rockies and into the Northern Plains on Tuesday, allowing for the development of a surface low. Strong southerly flow will bring temperatures into the upper 80s and lower 90s, as well as dewpoints in the upper 50s to lower 60s. This will allow for instability and rising motion, leading to the development of showers and thunderstorms. Given the instability and shear in place a few thunderstorms may become severe with hail in excess of 1 inch in diameter and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph will be possible. The most likely timing for severe weather will be in the afternoon and early evening.
