Severe thunderstorms are possible Friday across the Central and Southern Plains during the afternoon and evening.

An upper-level trough will move slowly eastward through the Great Basin and across the Rockies, providing forcing for rising motion over the western Great Plains. The upper-level trough will allow for a surface low pressure system across northeast Colorado and western Nebraska. Strong southerly winds will develop over the Great Plains in response to the low, bringing warm, moist air throughout the region. This warm, moist, and unstable air mass, combined with strong forcing aloft and strong wind shear will allow for strong to severe thunderstorms across southern Nebraska, Kansas, western Oklahoma, and northwestern Texas ahead of the dryline. Primary impacts of tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail are possible along with frequent lightning and heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding in some areas.
