Severe thunderstorms are possible Tuesday for portions of the Southern Plains.

On Tuesday, a threat for hazardous thunderstorms is forecast across the Southern Plains and into the upper Mississippi Delta. Across the Southern Plains, a warm front is forecast to shift to the north across Oklahoma, allowing for moisture return to build northwest across central Texas and south/central Oklahoma centered along the Red River. With the moisture return and surface heating, a weak disturbance aloft will move through the area allowing for convergence to occur along the dryline across west Texas. With the convergence, scattered strong to potentially severe thunderstorms are forecast to develop in the afternoon hours. Main threats across Texas and Oklahoma associated with any storm development include gusty winds in excess of 50 mph and hail in excess of 1 inch in diameter and perhaps a tornado or two. Across the upper Mississippi Delta, the slow moving frontal boundary along with the southerly flow from the Gulf of Mexico are the primary factors for storm development. As such, scattered strong thunderstorms are forecast to develop ahead of the front. Main across the upper Mississippi Delta with any storm development include gusty winds in excess of 40 mph and hail up to an inch in diameter.
