Rain and thunderstorms will be possible New Year's Day for the South Central US. Light to moderate freezing rain and sleet is likely from the Southern Plains through the Midwest. Upper elevation snow will continue for the Four Corners region.
A moist airmass lifting into the Plains will allow for showers and thunderstorms for much of the South Central US. While severe weather is not anticipated, a few thunderstorms may contain hail and gusty winds.
For the Southern Plains through Midwest, surging moisture will allow for a wintery mix of light to moderate icing with some isolated higher amounts from Texas through Missouri. Icing across the Midwest is not expected until late Thursday into early Friday.
Snow will continue for the Four Corners region ahead of an area of low pressure. 2-6 inches of snow will be possible with isolated higher amounts in southwestern Colorado.
