Heavy to excessive rainfall, high winds, and isolated thunderstorms are likely Thursday for Northern and Central California. Across Central California, isolated strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible. Blizzard conditions will be likely for the Sierra Nevada above 6000 feet. Snow will continue for Western New York and Northern New England.

A significant area of low pressure will bring thunderstorms with damaging winds to 50 miles per hour and flooding to portions of Northern and Central California today. 3-6 inches of rain will be possible for much of the area, but over 8 inches of rain will be possible in isolated areas.

Across Central California, strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible. With any storms that develop, heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds will be possible. The best chance for severe thunderstorms will be between San Francisco to just north of Los Angeles.

Snow and blizzard conditions are developing over the Sierra Nevada and will spread southward through early Friday Morning. Blizzard conditions are expected above 6000 feet with 8 to 16 inches of snow possible and 2-3 feet in the highest elevations. Winds 30-50 miles per hour and gusts to 70 miles per hour and higher are expected. Winds will decrease by Friday morning and snow levels will fall to around 5000 feet.

An area of low pressure that has been lingering off the New England coast will exit the region, but lake effect snow is possible across Western New York. 3-6 inches of snow with isolated areas receiving up to 8 inches will be possible across Southwestern New York.
